St Michael man fined $30 000 for cannabis offences

A 29-year-old resident of St Michael, Barbados, has received a $30,000 fine after entering guilty pleas to two narcotics offences: trafficking and importing controlled cannabis. Lynson Henderson Cox, a local resident from Lewis Gap, made his first court appearance before Magistrate Gayle Scott at the District ‘A’ Traffic Court this past Saturday, where he admitted his involvement in the smuggling operation.

According to official statements from The Barbados Police Service (TBPS), the criminal activity took place on July 13, when law enforcement seized a shipment of suspected cannabis weighing approximately eight kilogrammes. Investigators have estimated that the seized narcotics have a total street value of $128,000 on the local illegal drug market.

Following the conviction, Magistrate Scott ordered Cox to pay the full $30,000 fine within a six-month timeframe. If Cox fails to meet this financial penalty, he will instead serve a six-month custodial sentence at Dodds prison. The arrest and formal criminal charges against the 29-year-old were handled exclusively by the TBPS Narcotics Unit, the department responsible for combating illegal drug trade across the island nation.
