Nevis to Introduce Radar Speed Cameras; Motorists Urged to Drive Responsibly

CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS – July 6, 2026 – The Nevis Island Administration (NIA) is moving forward with a landmark plan to introduce automated radar speed cameras across the island, launching a proactive public campaign urging all motorists to adopt consistent, responsible driving habits ahead of the system’s launch.

Premier Mark Brantley first made the official announcement during a June 30 press briefing, outlining that the photo radar technology will be installed at carefully selected strategic locations across Nevis. Unlike the current manual traffic enforcement model that requires uniformed officers to be present on-site to issue citations, the new system will automate the entire ticketing process, boosting enforcement efficiency and reducing the manpower burden on local law enforcement.

“Right now, enforcing speed limits requires an officer to be on location to catch speeding violations. With the new automated system, we will deploy unmarked and fixed speed traps, and anyone caught exceeding posted limits will face automatic financial penalties,” Brantley explained to reporters.

The initiative draws on the successful outcomes of an identical program rolled out on neighboring St. Kitts. That program was introduced in the wake of a series of deadly speeding-related traffic collisions, and has since contributed to a marked reduction in speeding incidents and fatal crashes. The NIA is moving forward with its version of the program specifically to avoid similar preventable tragedies on Nevis’ roads.

“We have no intention of letting that crisis come to our island. That is why we are giving advance public notice: speed cameras are coming, so I ask all residents and visitors to drive carefully and respectfully on our roads,” Brantley emphasized.

To ensure the program is implemented fairly and transparently, the NIA is completing upgrades to Nevis’ road infrastructure before the speed camera network goes live. Work includes adding new traffic signage and improving the visibility of existing speed limit markers and other traffic guidance signs, so drivers are clearly aware of local speed regulations at all times.

While an official launch date has not yet been finalized, officials are already advising motorists to adjust their driving habits and strictly follow posted speed limits immediately. Once operational, the network will rotate camera locations on a regular schedule to prevent drivers from slowing down only at known fixed camera sites – a common loophole that undermines road safety efforts. Traffic violation notices will be sent digitally to registered vehicle owners under the automated system, cutting processing time for citations.

The new radar speed camera program is the latest step in the NIA’s long-standing commitment to improving road safety across Nevis, with a core goal of cutting the risk of serious and fatal traffic collisions by encouraging consistent, legal driving behavior.
